HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The race for the CSC Division I boys basketball title got very interesting on Thursday, with Mohawk escaping Herkimer with an 82-74 victory in double overtime. The win improves the Mohicans overall record to 15-2, as well as their league record to 9-2. But even better is that Mohawk has a chance at the league title, after leader Dolgeville lost 58-40 at Adirondack. That means Mohawk can force a tie atop the league with a win over Dolgeville next Wednesday.
Thursday's Mohicans win didn't start out very promising, with Herkimer using the excitement from their Senior Night festivites to jump out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter. Paul Grubner scored 10 of his 15 points in the quarter for the Magicians.
But the one-two punch of Winston Smithson and Carson Murphy helped carry the Mohicans the rest of the way, with Smithson scoring 30 points and Murphy adding 20. Mike Fahy had the Herkimer high score with 18.
