H.S. Football: Indians hold on to beat Mohawk
MOHAWK, N.Y. (WKTV) - In a hard fought Class D East showdown on opening night, West Canada Valley hung on to beat Mohawk 18-13.
Carson Murphy seemed to score a go ahead touchdown from a yard out for Mohawk with 40 seconds left, but the TD was called back on a holding penalty. On the next play, Murphy was picked off by Ryan Grogan to seal the Indians' victory.
Mohawk had driven 99 yards to set up Murphy for the winning score, but it wasn't to be on this night. Murphy finished 110 yard through the air, completing eight of twenty passes with a 15 yard TD to Mike Santillo, but also two interceptions. He also ran for 62 yards, 18 of which came on a first quarter TD run.
Jack Minasi led West Canada with 216 yards on 33 carries, along with two TDs, one from 14 yards out and another from 38 yards.
The Indians next host Cooperstown in their home opener next Saturday, while Mohawk goes to Dolgeville that same day.
