CAMDEN, NY (WKTV) - Head coach Aaron Fiorini's rebuilding project at Camden took its biggest step forward yet on Friday night, as the Blue Devils whipped Whitesboro 35-21 to clinch a share of the Class A National title and the earn the league's top seed for the Section III playoffs.
Camden, in its third year under Fiorini, came into the game 3-1 in league play, tied with Whitesboro and defending champion Carthage but in control of its own destiny thanks to beating the Comets the week before. The Blue Devils made an immediate statement, intercepting a pass on Whitesboro's opening possession of the game and turning it into a 1-yard quarterback sneak touchdown by D.J. Forbragd. A few minutes later, Camden added a 10-yard touchdown pass from Forbragd to Holden Coon on its next possession for a 13-0 lead.
Whitesboro responded on its ensuing possession, with Jordan Smith scoring on a 5-yard run early in the second quarter to cut the score to 13-7. The Warriors then forced a Camden punt and drove to the Blue Devils' 20-yard line, but Camden's defense provided a 4th-down stop to turn the ball over. The Blue Devils capitalized with a 9-yard touchdown run by Forbragd, then added a spectacular 52-yard touchdown run by Kyle Conniff on their next possession late in the half to go up 28-7 at the break.
Camden kept the offense coming in the third quarter with a 53-yard touchdown completion to Conniff to make it 35-7, and with Whitesboro starting quarterback Junior Woodard out of the game with an unknown injury suffered late in the first half, the Warriors were in trouble. Whitesboro got within striking distance with a 10-yard scoring run by Matt Morosco late in the third quarter and a 5-yard run by backup quarterback Chris Gibbs early in the fourth, but Camden's defense did not allow the Warriors to get any closer.
Forbragd finished 5 of 7 for 108 yards passing and two touchdowns and rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
The Blue Devils finish the regular season 4-1 in league play and 4-3 overall, sharing the league title with Carthage (4-1, 5-2). As the top seed in Class A National, they'll host the No. 4 seed in Class A American in the first round of the Section III playoffs next Friday night. Whitesboro (3-2, 3-4) settles for the No. 3 seed and will travel to the No. 2 seed in Class A American in the first round.
