Magicians pound Cooperstown

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The defending Section III Class C champion Herkimer football team continues to roll through their 2012 schedule, as they beat Cooperstown 61-12 Friday night.  Another impressive win, albeit against a Class D team, ups the Magicians' record to 5-0.

Herkimer got started early, as Joseph McKinney picked off Sawyer Haney and returned the ball to the seven yard line.  On the very next play, Matt Borek scored a touchdown.  Along with a two point conversion, Herkimer led 8-0 just 57 seconds into the game.

On the next Redskins possession, Haney was intercepted again, this time by Stephen Scialdo, who took it to the 15.  Ryan Fahy then took it the rest of the way on the first Herkimer offensive play of that drive.  In just 1:54, the Magicians had a 16-0 lead on just 22 yards of offense.

Herkimer continued their scoring with a 16 yard TD run by Borek, though a two point miss made it 22-0.  Late in the half, the Magicians picked up a safety to make it 24-0 Herkimer at the end of the first half.

Herkimer took a 49-0 lead at halftime and rolled in the second half to victory.  Borek finished with 13 carries for 118 yards and his two TDs, while Zach Steele added 62 yards and two TDs on nine carries.  Fahy caught two passes for 95 yards and two TDs.

The Magicians defense also intercepted five Cooperstown passes.  Herkimer's final regular season game is next Saturday at Little Falls.  Cooperstown hosts Mt Markham on Friday night.
