Westmo, Dolgeville prepare for showdown

WKTV - This Saturday there will be more on the line than just the Class D East title when Westmoreland visits Dolgeville.  The winner can lay claim to being the best football team of all the small schools in the Mohawk Valley.

"You see Westmoreland on the schedule, they're a bubble team I call them, three kids away from being a C, so you always get nervous about the bigger school," says Dolgeville head coach Chris Connolly.  "Great program, coach Gates and I go back a long way."

That long way for Connolly and Westmo head coach Tim Gates dates back to 1990, when Gates  was an assistant on Connolly's staff at Clinton.

"We're trying to embrace the opportunity to go to Dolgeville, play a great team with great tradition on their home field for a league championship," says Gates.  "It's why we work in the summertime, why we go to coaching clinics."

The two teams are both 6-0, having navigated through the restructured Class D East, though both had close shaves against West Canada.

"We've actually been waiting for this game, this is the game we were hooked on," says Westmo senior RB/LB Tyler Barnes.  "Preparation all year.  We're really happy to be playing Dolgeville for the title."

"When the schedule came out at the beginning of the year, obviously we all saw Westmoreland for the last game," adds Dolgeville senior TE/DL Travis Kopet.  "We try not to look ahead, focus on the games before that, but now that it's finally here, we're ready to go."

Each team had formidable running attacks with a lot of weapons, so defense will be the key to victory.

"It's going to be good challenge," says Dolgeville senior RB/LB Jared Frederick.  "It's going to be a great game, Westmoreland's a good team, they're not going to come in and make it easy for us."

"Some of the teams we've been playing we knew we could win, but we still take it as a challenge to ourselves to get better as a team," adds Westmo senior lineman Toby Fitzgeraold.  "We study all week and Saturday is our test."

It will be a classic matchup when the Blue Devils and Bulldogs go at it and you can bet both teams will be pumped up, as will their fans.

Kickoff from Bill Bynon Field in Dolgeville is set for Saturday at 1:30.
