Boys Soccer: Ward ties record, leads Ilion victory
ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - Senior Dan Ward tied an Ilion record Monday, scoring six goals in the Golden Bombers' 9-4 win over Frankfort-Schuyler. Ward now has 66 career goals, which ties Brad Sweeney who set the record in 1995.
Ward has 26 goals on the season and is four away from tying Chad Binney's single season record, set in 1999.
Ward got Iion on the board four minutes into the game, starting a three goal run in which Nate Laymon scored one in between two by Ward.
It looked like Ilion was in control, but with six minutes left until halftime the Maroon Knights came back. Dan Kisylak had two goals including the equalizer, with Kyle Unser adding one as well.
But the Golden Bombers exploded in the second behind Ward, who picked up four more in the final forty minutes. Josh Terry also scored twice for Ilion, who took 33 shots in the game.
After the game, Ilion head coach Jim Mott talked about how tough the win was for his team. "Frankfort made us play our best tonight. Give them and Coach Reina a ton of credit. When they got down 3-0 they fought back and tied it 3-3 with a ll the momentum. We were able to make some adjustments and Dan Ward carried us on his back tonight. It was a nice win that we had to earn."
With the win, Ilion improves to 7-1 on the season. Ward will attempt to break the career scoring mark on Friday at Little Falls.
