HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - After suffering their first loss of the season over the weekend, the Ilion boys soccer team rebounded Tuesday, topping Herkimer 7-2. Seniors Dan Ward (4 goals) and Nate Laymon (3 goals, 1 assist) led the Golden Bombers, who improved to 4-1 overall on the year.
On Saturday, Ilion fell 2-1 in heartbreaking fashion to league foe Cooperstown, so coming back strong was important for coach Jim Mott and his team.
"This was a nice way for us to bounce back after losing to Cooperstown," Mott said after Tuesday's win. "Everybody stepped up and played their role and did their job on the team today. I am very pleased with our progress and the effort."
Ward's four goals gives him 18 for the season, which means he needs just nine to break the school's career goals record. He also needs just 13 to set a new single season record at Ilion.
Herkimer's goals were scored by Nick deJong and Mark Verenich. deJong's goal came just 38 seconds after Laymon's first, which cut Ilion's lead at the time to 2-1.
But the Golden Bombers woudl strike two more times by the end of the half, with Ward and Laymon each netting two, to give Ilion a 4-1 lead at the break.
