ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Dan Fruscella
By BRIAN SANDLER
HOLLAND PATENT, N.Y. (WKTV) - This week's Athlete of the Week is Dan Fruscella from Holland Patent. He earned our award this past fall for football, and now he's done it again for wrestling.
The senior became just the second Holland Patent wrestler ever to win a sectional championship last weekend, winning the Division II, 189-pound title. Even more impressive, he pinned his first two opponents in just a minute and a half and a little over two minutes and did not allow a single point in any of his three matches.
But Fruscella is not just the second wrestler in Holland Patent's program to win a sectional title; he's also the second in his family, following his father, Jim. When asked if he could beat his dad in his prime, Fruscella hesitated and laughed, saying "he was mean."
On Fruscella's talent and success on the mat, head coach John Richard says, "There are those athletes that are out there that are just that: they're pure athletes. Each year they keep getting better, each year they learn a little bit more. You just get it sometimes. As an athlete, you know what needs to be done and you work toward that. It's a mental edge at this point in time."
Fruscella's next goal is a state title, something he was a runner-up for last year. He won his opening two matches Friday at the state meet in Albany, sending him to the semifinals on Saturday.
