Holland Patent baseball bashed by Skaneateles in semifinals

HOLLAND PATENT, N.Y. (WKTV) - In an unlikely semifinal matchup on Sunday, No. 11 seed Skaneateles pounded No. 10 Holland Patent 15-3 to advance to the Section III, Class B championship.

Skaneateles (17-10) will face top-seeded and state-ranked No. 5 Westhill in the final.  Holland Patent finishes the season 18-8.

With a strong wind blowing and swirling over the field, Skaneateles took advantage with several deep blasts that went for run-scoring extra-base hits.  Zack Augustine hit a three-run double in a four-run second inning to make it 6-1, a two-run double in a three-run fifth inning that made it 10-2 and Sean Cooney hit a three-run triple in a five-run seventh to produce the final score.

Augustine finished 3-for-5 with two doubles, six RBI and two runs scored while Jacob Carvalho turned four walks into four runs.  Nolan Cunningham was the beneficiary of the support on the mound, allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings on five hits, four walks and striking out four for the win.

Cody Crego took the loss for Holland Patent, lasting just 1.2 innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on two hits and four walks.  The three relievers who followed each allowed at least a run, but the defense was just as problematic with six errors in the game.  Five of the 15 runs allowed were unearned.
