ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - Zane Smith hit a 29 yard field goal at the end of an exciting opening night matchup as Notre Dame/Rome Catholic beat Ilion 31-30. The two Class C East rivals went back and forth all game, with neither team ever leading by more than seven points.
With the Golden Bombers up 22-21 in the third quarter, Jugglers QB Zach Kesterson scored on a 20 yard touchdown run to put ND/RCH up 28-22.
Ilion took the lead back at the beginning of the fourth quarter, on a one yard TD run by Mykel Farley, 30-28.
The Jugglers only threw one pass all game, tallying 404 yards on the ground and never punted. Kesterson rushed 16 times for 100 yards and the third quarter score.
Vinny Sorce carried the ball 12 times for 76 yards and two scores, while Jordan Chrobak carried it just seven times, but picked up 143 yards and a touchdown.
ND/RCH hosts Holland Patent next Saturday for their home opener, while Ilion goes to rival Herkimer, likely for the last time.
