WATERVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - In a game that featured 19 errors and 31 runs, Mt. Markham baseball barely hung on to beat Waterville on Monday 17-14.
Trailing 5-3 after two innings, Mt. Markham surged ahead in the third as each of its nine batters scored a run to put the Mustangs up 12-5. Mt. Markham increased its lead to 16-6 in the top of the sixth and was poised to win by slaughter rule, but Waterville took advantage of three errors in the bottom half to score four runs and stay alive.
Mt. Markham added another run in the top of the seventh to go up 17-10, but two more errors helped Waterville score four runs and come within a batter of getting the tying run to the plate. Mercifully, the game finally ended on a flyout.
The Mustangs finished with 10 errors while Waterville made nine. Dom McNamara grinded through six innings to pick up the victory.
Mt. Markham is now 2-7 overall and 1-1 in Center State Conference Division II. Waterville falls to 1-6 (0-2).
