WEST WINFIELD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Although the final score didn't show it, Mount Markham battle Sauquoit Valley hard on a cold night in girls soccer, but in the end the Lady Indians still won 4-0. Elisa Marchione had two goals while former NEWSChannel 2 Athlete of the Week Sierra Kiss had two assists to lead Sauquoit Valley (11-1, 11-0 league) to their third straight CSC Division II regular season title.
The win avenges Sauquoit's first regular season loss in over two years, a 2-1 defeat at Class B Clinton last Friday, and handed the Lady Mustangs their first actual loss of the season. (Mount Markham was forced to forfeit eight wins, so they would have been 10-1-1 after this game. Instead they are 3-8-1 and likely eliminated from postseason contention.)
The matchup between the rivals was anything but a blowout, however, as both teams were held scoreless until Kiss set up Marchione with fourteen minutes left in the first half.
The game stayed at 1-0 going into halftime, with Sauquoit taking a two goal lead about twelve minutes into the second when Meghan Gaffney set up Marchione's second score of the game.
The Lady Mustangs had a chance to score on a breakaway attempt later in the half, but Maeline Hollenback made a spectacular deflection on defense at the last moment to break up the drive.
Nicky Burline and Morgan Mielnicky also added goals for the Lady Indians, the latter set up by Kiss, just before she took her curtain call to come out of the game.
Sauquoit keeper Vanessa Jecko had ten saves to earn her seventh clean sheet of the season and the juinior has allowed just six goals in twelve games.
The two teams will square off again Wednesday night on the turf at Sauquoit.
