Lady Spartans fend off rival Whitesboro

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The New Hartford girls basketball team earned their third straight win to start the season, beating rival Whitesboro 48-39 Tuesday night, in the Lady Spartans home opener.  It's the 202nd win in the career of head coach Mike Callan, who earned number 100 last Friday night.

Amy Evans scored the game high, with 22 points for New Hartford, who's lost in the Class A state championship each of the past two seasons, last year to Whitesboro.  Ashley Chanatry added 13 points and Theano Alvanos had 11.

Whitesboro, who graduated two of their key players, Allie Cady and Francesca Cotrupe, now at St Lawrence and Ithaca respectively, didn't hit a single field goal until the second quarter, nine minutes into the game.

The Lady Warriors, however, took a 17-15 lead to halftime.  Jen Deuel led Whitesboro with 13 points, while Maria Lapertosa and Kayleigh Camerota added 11.

New Hartford took control in the second half, outscoring their rivals 16-10 in the third quarter and 17-12 in the fourth.
