UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The New Hartford Spartans rallied for yet another one run win this post season and have now earned the right to play in the state final four.
Ben Phelps ripped an RBI single down the right field line to score Kris Martinelli as the Spartans came back, down 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh to win 7-6 over Glens Falls in the Class A regional final on Thursday night. They advance to face Grand Island on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Sylvester Field at
Union-Endicott High School.
The rally all started with two outs in the seventh. Kris Martinelli brought Joe Donovan home with a base hit. Then John Calabrece smacked an RBI single, that brought home Conor Manderson to tie the game at six. Tory King then drew a walk to set the stage for Phelps dramatic single to win the game.
"It's pretty obvious at this point we know that we can do it." Phelps said after the game. "We can always come back. We've won how many one run games? I don't even know anymore. We were just talking about how to keep cool and get runners on base, keep rallying and try to get a win."
For New Hartford, it's their fourth one run, come-from-behind win in the post season. For the first time since earlier this season, they have a winning record as well at 11-10.
"Baseball's the greatest game." head coach John Randall said. "There's no clock, the game keeps going and going and for a sophomore to get a hit like that and he smoked it too. It was just incredible."
It's the Spartans first appearnce in the state final four since 2005.
