NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Despite a late rally by their biggest rivals, the Whitesboro baseball team held on for a 5-4 win at Corr Field Thursday. Mike Bunal cruised through six inning on the Whitesboro mound, but couldn't finish the job, as John Crossley finished it.
Bunal struck out nine batters, though many Spartan fans were left a little bewildered by the size of the strike zone on some of Bunal's punch outs.
Whitesboro got two runs in the fourth inning, on an RBI double by Connor Passalacqua scoring Dan Cecilia, then on an infield single by Adam Broski scoring Passalacqua.
The Warriors scored two more in the sixth, on a two run double by Broski scoring Passalacqua and Devin Lebuis. Cecilia then drove in one more run in the seventh on a double scoring Bunal.
The Spartans scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the seventh and were in position to at least tie the score, but fell just short. New Hartford falls to 1-2 on the season in their TV-L debut. The Spartans host Notre Dame Monday at 4:15 p.m.
Whitesboro improved their league record to 1-1 and their overall record to 2-5. The Warriors will face Proctor Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Stop DWI Tourney at Murnane Field.
