SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WKTV) - A run that's taken the NY Mills boys basketball team to the states two straight years came to an end Sunday as the Marauders fell 62-61 to Sackets Harbor in the Section III Class D final. The Patriots beat the defending state champs for the second time this year, as the Marauders finished the season at 19-3.
Matt Welch and Nick Colmenale each finished with 19 points to lead Mills, while Nick Etienne added 9 points and 9 rebounds.
Colmenale hit four straight three pointers in the first quarter, though Mills trailed 22-21 heading to the second. The Marauders took the lead at halftime, 35-34, but Sackets came back to go ahead 48-47 after three quarters.
Mills had a chance at the end of the game, but Welch fell over a Patriot player and was called for travelling. Welch talked about how frustrating it was to have his stellar Marauder career end in that way.
"Now on the bus ride home you're thinking, what could have I done better to win this game, what could I have done at the end that would have pulled us out on top. It just hurts."
Head coach Mike Adey lauded his team, espeically the seniors, Welch, Nick Etienne, Addison Wolanin and Jordan Wilcox. "I'm extremely proud of my team. I think they handled themselves very well and they lost in the Carrier Dome. So did Duke, North Carolina, Indiana, NC State and every other team in the Big East, now you can add NY Mills to that list."
