ONEIDA, N.Y. (WKTV) - After struggling at times during the first half of its Section III, Class A playoff opener on Tuesday, the No. 4-seeded Oneida boys started the second half with a 22-0 run en route to a 70-42 win over No. 13 Phoenix.
Oneida started the game with an 8-0 run and built a 20-10 lead late in the first quarter, but Phoenix came back with a 12-2 run spanning into the second quarter to tie the game at 22. Oneida took two two-point leads which Phoenix subsequently erased, then the Indians broke out for a 13-0 run to open up a 39-26 lead.
Phoenix got two back before the end of the half, but the Indians torched the Firebirds in the second half, outscoring them 31-14.
The victory sends the Indians, now 16-5, into the quarterfinals, where they'll host No. 5-seeded Tri Valley League and local rival V-V-S Friday at 7:00. Oneida swept the regular-season series with the Red Devils, but V-V-S head coach Al Knapp says the Indians have never beaten his team three times in a season.
Mexico ends the season 9-11.
Ryan Kramer led Oneida with 21 points.
