Mohawk Girls Win Oriskany Tournament; N.Y. Mills Takes Consolation

ORISKANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Mohawk girls basketball team took three and a half minutes to score its first field goal, scored 16 points in the next three and a half minutes for an 18-0 run, then held on to beat comeback-minded Oriskany 38-34 in the championship game of Oriskany's holiday tournament on Tuesday.

After two scoreless minutes to start the game, Oriskany struck first with a layup and free throw for a 3-0 lead.  Mohawk then went on an 18-0 run and led 27-14 at halftime.  Oriskany cut the game to 34-31 in the final minute, but the Lady Mohicans held on for the victory.

Katie Monahan scored a game-high 16 points for Mohawk (7-1) while teammate Christy Traglia earned tournament Most Valuable Player.  Megan Serley led Oriskany (5-2) with 14 points.

In the consolation game, Frankfort-Schuyler led New York Mills 12-6 after the first quarter and 24-20 at halftime, but the Lady Marauders outscored the Lady Maroon Knights 12-0 in the third to pull ahead for a 42-31 win.

Adriana Surprenant led the Mills (4-2) with 20 points while Alexandra Palumbo paced Frankfort-Schuyler (3-7) with 11.
