NEWPORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - The West Canada Valley boys basketball team opened up a new season by edging Poland 55-54 in a battle of local rivals Friday night. Jordan Yaworski scored 13 of his game high 22 points in the fourth quarter for the Indians.
Max Searles had six points off the bench all in the final eight minutes, including the go ahead basket with five seconds left to play. Ryan Grogan also added 11 for West Canada, while Ross Agen led the Tornadoes, with 15.
Free throw shooting down the stretch was key, as Yaworski ahd 11 in the fourth, while Poland missed 11. The Tornadoes led 46-28 with just six minutes left, but only could muster eight more points the rest of the way.
The win was the first for new WCV head coach D.J. Shepardson, who is taking over at the helm for his first year after the retirement of Steve Porter.
Prior to the game, the West Canada P.A. announcer and all the fans paid tribute to both of Poland's soccer teams, the boys who made the state final four and the girls who won the state championship.
