REMSEN, N.Y. (WKTV) - The New York Mills boys basketball team overcame an undermanned but upset-minded Remsen squad on Saturday, winning 61-52 to clinch the outright Center State Conference Division IV title on the regular season's final day.
Leading 25-24 at halftime, the Marauders opened the third quarter with a 12-2 run to go up 37-26. Playing with only six players, the Rams responded with a 9-0 run to cut it to 37-35. New York Mills recovered with a 10-1 run to go back up by 11 at 47-36, but Remsen came back with a 10-2 run spanning into the fourth quarter to get within three at 49-46. But the Marauders' depth eventually wore down the Rams, who played the final minute and a half with just five players after one fouled out.
Fred Russ led the Mills with 18 points while Matthew Vasco scored 16 and Edgardo Colon added 14. Remsen was led by Spencer Ballard's 15 points and nine rebounds and also got double-digit scoring from Travis Wilder with 12 and Kody Burke with 10.
The Marauders end the regular season 14-6 overall and 11-1 in league play; Remsen finishes 11-9 overall.
