Remsen, Sauquoit ladies gunning for titles

By MIKE LEVIN

WKTV - Remsen and Sauquoit Valley girls soccer are both hoping to take their first state titles this weekend, but each will have to win two games in back to back days.

Sauquoit Valley is back in the Class C Final Four and the Lady Indians have one thing on their mind:  Getting back to the title game and winning it.

"When we walked off the field (last year), I said don't worry, we're going to be coming back here next year and the girls worked hard all year and their hard work is really paying off," says head coach Tim Clive.

"All of us are excited to relive last year and to make history again, redo it all.," says senior Sierra Kiss, a former NEWSChannel 2 Athlete of the Week.

"It's exciting, we just need to make it happen this time and looking for that opportunity to win a state championship now," added junior keeper Vanessa Jecko.

Remsen is at states for the first time and the Lady Rams are ready to take care of business in the Class D bracket.

"They just keep on playing fantastic every single game and they never let up," says head coach Jim Wilder.  "Just getting to the final four is a tremendous honor for these girls."

"It's been a real experience, my first year being on varsity, it's been great," says freshman keeper Megan Will.

But as good as the Lady Rams have been, they'd still like to win it all.  "It would be amazing, that would mean everything, I would love that," says Will.

Former Athlete of the Week Erin O'Connor agrees.  "It would be just undescribable, as a sophomore, making it to the final four, we all are so excited."

Both schools are taking snow days, so each will have plenty of support in all the games they play this weekend.

"We should a lot of people there, there's talk around school already, they're getting on the fan buses, they're going to drive out," says Sauquoit senior Chelsea Schloop.  "Some people are staying out thursday night so they don't have to drive out Friday morning, but there should be a ton of people there."

Sauquoit plays SS Seward at SUNY Cortland in the C semis at 9:30 Friday morning, while Remsen meets Smithtown Christian in the D semis at TC3 at 11:45.  If they win, Sauquoit would play in their second straight C Championship, Saturday morning at 10 from Homer.  If Remsen advances, they'd play at 11 at TC3.
