ONEONTA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Remsen girls soccer team is heading back to the state final four after a 2-0 win over Morris Saturday in the Class D regionals at the old Soccer Hall of Fame fields.
Joleen Marfone had the first goal of the game, about midway through the first half, which was the only goal until the closing moments, when NEWSChannel 2 Athlete of the Week Erin O'Connor scored her 40th goal of the season, to clinch the win for the Rams.
"Morris played a fantastic ballgame," said head coach Jim Wilder. "I think our girls we're shocked, we were on our heels most of the time. We're supposed to be the top team out here and we were on our heels a lot of the ballgame."
Fans of both teams flocked to the HOF fields to check out the game, though Morris had a slight advantage, being so close to the site.
"It was intense, " said Marfone, the freshman whose first half goal set the pace. "We both wanted it and was nerve racking for all of us, but we came out strong."
"It was fun, but it was kind of weird because we're not used to it," added keeper Megan Will, who had ten saves en route to her twelfth shutout of the year. "We're used to turf, the big stadium, so this was definitely a change for us."
Last season Remsen made it to the state semis for the first time, but this year they're hoping to win, not just in the semis, but in the state championship.
The semis will be next Saturday morning at 11 and if Remsen (18-0) wins, they would advance to the Class D championship, Sunday at 11.
