New Hartford Hockey Rolls Over Rome

By By BRIAN SANDLER

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Rome Free Academy may have led the Section III, Division II East ice hockey standings entering Friday, but New Hartford took the top spot away in blowout fashion with a 7-1 win.

New Hartford, which entered the game undefeated in league play but trailed RFA due to the Black Knights having more points from more games played, got hat tricks from Tom Fiorentino and Clayton Whittemore.

The victory sends the Spartans, ranked No. 2 in the state in Division II, to 5-0 in league play (10-2 overall) and puts them in a first-place tie with No. 1 Cazenovia, which is also 5-0 (10-0-1 overall).  Pending a tie, that tie will be broken on Wednesday when New Hartford hosts Cazenovia.

RFA drops to 4-2-1 in league play and 7-6-1 overall.

The Spartans also beat RFA in a non-league matchup 5-2 in their season-opener.
