9 local runners heading to states


VERONA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Nine cross country runners from the Mohawk Valley qualified for the NYSPHSAA races on Saturday's Section III meet from V-V-S.

Three of the runners are from Class D girls, who finished fourth, fifth and sixth repsectively at sectionals.  The runners are Samantha Fanion of Cooperstown, Makenna Cooley of Remsen and Marissa Jones from Sauquoit Valley.

Every runner from the team who wins the sectionals in each class makes the states, along with the next five individual finishers.  There were no team winners from the Mohawk Valley among the eight champions.

Six boys qualified for states, including Erik Winberg from RFA, who finished fifth in Class A.  There were three locals who qualified in Class C, Todd Stevens (third place) and Barrett Celecki (fifth place) from Holland Patent, as well as Brandon Rawson (sixth) from Ilion.

In Class D boys, Nicholas Spina from Sauquoit Valley finished in second place, while Connor Marchione of Notre Dame finished fifth.

The state meet will take place Saturday, November 10th at Elma Meadows Golf Course in Elma, just outisde of Buffalo.

The girls C race will begin at 9:30am, with the D race at 10.  The Boys C race is at 11:30, the D at noon and the A at 12:30pm.
