UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The SUNYIT Wildcats (14-3, 8-1 NEAC) weathered an impressive second half push by Wells College (5-13, 3-7 NEAC) on Sunday to claim victory, 67-57. Four players scored in double-figures for the Lady Wildcats, and SUNYIT as a team shot a solid 19 for 25 from the free throw line to earn the victory.
On the other side, forward Ashley Roser played an inspired game, going for 19 points and 14 rebounds. Roser carried the team for stretches in the second half, when the Express rallied to within three, 58-55 with 4:29 to play.
Ultimately the visitors were unable to match up with the Wildcats strong inside presence – SUNYIT out rebounded Wells by a 55 to 39 margin. Nailah Cherry (Roosevelt, N.Y. / Roosevelt) and Ashley Schmidt (Camden, N.Y. / Camden) both recorded double-doubles for the home team; Cherry grabbed a massive 16 rebounds and scored 10 points, while Schmidt poured in 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Sarah Couvillon (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) wasn't far behind with 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks.
The Wildcats now await division rival SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday. The home contest is slated to start at 7:00 pm.
