After much offseason discussion and debate, the merging of Mohawk's and Richfield Springs' football programs is in its final stages.
According to Richfield Springs superintendent Bob Barraco the new team will be referred to as Mohawk/Richfield Springs, but a new nickname has not yet been chosen (Mohawk's teams are the Mohicans and Richfield Springs' are the Indians). Mohawk head coach Roy Upson will continue in that position while the assistant staff will be comprised of coaches from both schools.
Home games will be played at Richfield Springs while Mohawk's field is under construction and the players have designed and agreed on new home jerseys that combine the two schools' primary colors of orange (Mohawk) and purple (Richfield Springs). The home pants will be purple and the helmets will be orange. The away uniforms will by Mohawk's old away uniforms.
The athletic team merger is the second for the schools, which also share a boys varsity wrestling program. Richfield Springs also combines its boys varsity soccer and girls varsity softball teams with Owen D. Young.
