Sauquoit falls again in title game

By MIKE LEVIN

HOMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - It was like a recurring nightmare for the Sauquoit Valley girls soccer team, as they were defeated 1-0 by Marion Saturday in the Class C state championship.  The Lady Indians came all the way back from losing in this same game in 2009, but again fell short of their title goal.

Olivia Shur scored the game's only goal, about sixteen minutes into the second half, burying a shot to the back right corner past keeper Vanessa Jecko.

Jecko had four saves on the game, while Marion keeper Morgan Statt had five.

The wind played a factor all game, as both teams struggled to navigate and control the ball amid the blustery conditions.

Sauquoit Valley's senior class, which includes former NEWSChannel 2 Athlete of the Week Sierra Kiss, as well as starters (and fellow captains) Meghan Gaffney and Chelsea Schloop, along with Morgan Mielnicki, Brianna Catrombone and Cassandra Malek, finished with back to back state title appearances and a lot of spectacular memories.
