Sauquoit girls headed back to Final 4

By Sports WKTV

CHITTENANGO, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Sauquoit Valley boat is still afloat. The Lady Indians beat Marathon 2-1 in the Class C Regional Final on Saturday.

In a tough battle between two section champs, Sauquoit broke the ice with about 12 minutes to go in the first half on a Meghan Gaffeny goal with an assist from Elisa Marchione. Marathon had a chance to tie before half but Vanessa Jecko, who finished with six saves on the day, stopped a point blank shot off her finger tips. That seemed to take the wind out of the Olympians sail.

Just a few minutes into the second half, Marchione found the back of the net to give the Lady Indians a 2-0 lead. Marathon did get a goal from Lindsay Perry about seven minutes later. However, head coach Tim Clive, as he has done in the past, moved Sierra Kiss and Marchione back on defense to tighten things up a bit. It worked perfectly.

Sauquoit will face S.S. Seward from Section IX at Cortland State next Friday at  9:30 a.m.
