WATERVILLE, NY (WKTV) - Oriskany clinched the No. 3 playoff seed in Class D East on Friday, holding off Waterville on the road 14-6.
The Redskins took the lead in the first quarter with two short touchdown runs by Kyle Cousins, then turned to their defense to hold on. Cousins provided the clinching play late in the fourth quarter, recovering a fumble after a long completion by Waterville that would have put the Indians in position to tie the game.
Garrett Getchel led Oriskany's attack with 94 rush yards on 14 carries; Cousins finished with 62 yards rushing.
With the victory, Oriskany finishes the regular season 5-2 (league play and overall) and gives itself a road opener in the Section III playoffs at the No. 2 seed from Class D West. Waterville, now 3-4, will rely on Saturday's Mohawk-New York Mills game to decide the fourth and final playoff berth. Mohawk is 3-3 and New York Mills is 2-4, so if Mohawk wins, the Mohicans get the berth, and if New York Mills wins, there will be a three-way tie with no clear advantage in terms of head-to-head results, so the team with the most first-half points scored this season will advance.
