WESTMORELAND, N.Y. (WKTV) - In a game that featured no scoring in the first quarter, Westmoreland hung on to beat Class D East rival West Canada Valley 14-13 Saturday. With the win the Bulldogs kept pace with Dolgeville, who also won Saturday, to stay in first place.
Westmo got the scoring started in the second quarter, on a short TD by Hassan Griffith that was set up on a great completion from Zack Green to Teddy Flint. Later in the quarter, Tyler Barnes added a six yard score to put the 'dawgs up 14-0 at the half.
But the Indians came back as Sebastian Torres ran for a 27 yard touchdown in the third quarter, then took a 26 yarder into the end zone in the fourth. Torres had 177 of West Canada's 313 rushing yards. The Indians went for a two point conversion, but failed.
West Canada had a chance to win late, but Tim Harrison made a touchdown saving tackle on the final play of the game.
Westmo will next play host to Mohawk next Saturday, while West Canada welcomes 2-0 Dolgeville.
