UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - You can't really call a defending section champion winning in the semifinals an upset, but with the Westmoreland football team seeded sixth in the Section III Class D semis, their 37-20 win Friday night over #2 West Canada was at least a little shocking. After all, the Indians were undefeated and blown through all of their competition, including a 40-0 win in their regular season finale over Dolgeville, who beat Westmoreland earlier this season.
Friday's game, held at Proctor's D'Alessandro Stadium, started off in West Canada's favor, as Ryan Moody connected with former NEWSChannel 2 Athlete of the Week Ryan Grogan from 35 yards out.
But then the Bulldogs scored three straight times, the first a five yard TD by current Athlete of the Week Tim Harrison and the next two by Zach Green. The Indians rebounded with another Moody to Grogan score, this time from 63 yards out.
Leading 24-14 at the half, Westmo got a couple of field goals from Green and another touchdown from Harrison to take control. By the time Moody picked up a late touchdown run, it was too late, as Westmoreland advanced to the Carrier Dome for another section final, this year against top seeded Sandy Creek.
