WESTMORELAND, N.Y. (WKTV) - If you thought that Westmoreland football was heading for a rough season, think again as the Bulldogs, playing back down in Class D, opened their 2011 campaign with a 42-6 drubbing over Waterville. Zack Green rushed ten times for 90 yards and two touchdowns, while Hassan Griffith added 76 yards on 13 carries and two scores. Green also had an interception, while Griffith had six tackles.
Westmo gained 353 yards on offense, all on the ground, while holding the Indians to just 23 yards rushing.
Green got the Bulldogs on the board in the first quarter with an eleven yard score. Griffith had the next touchdown, from four yards out. Ryan Murling added a 33 yard TD run to give Westmo a 22-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Waterville finally broke through in the second, with a 17 yard TD from John Piersma to Jake Knutti. But the Bulldogs struck again as Green rushed for a 23 yard TD, then Tyler Barnes rumbled in for a six yard score.
The final touchdown of the game came early in the fourth quarter, courtesy of Griffith.
It was also a brutally hot game, as players, coaches, officials and fans braved high temperatures and humidity.
Westmoreland will host West Canada next Saturday, while Waterville goes to Dolgeville.
