UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Westmoreland opened their 2010 season in familiar fashion, as the defending Section III Class D Bulldogs, back in Class C this year, knocked off the new Notre Dame-Rome Catholic combined team 39-14 Saturday. The Bulldogs came back from an early 7-6 deficit to take a 12-7 lead, thanks to a touchdown that developed from a screen pass by Dan Smith to Ryan Murling, in which Murling skirted down the sideline for the go ahead score.
Murling rushes eleven times for 54 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also caught a 31 yard touchdown pass from Smith. The Bulldog QB completed five of his eleven passes for 90 yards. He also rushed nine times for 53 yards.
The Jugglers scored their first touchdown after Mike Gaglianese recovered a Smith fumble, then Colin Pastorella threw a touchdown pass to Colin Hulser, which Ben Rolewicz nearly knocked away. But instead the ball deflected off Rolewicz and Hulser caught it in the air for the score.
Marvin Sherman returned two interceptions for touchdowns, one for 45 yards and another for 80.
Westmoreland is trying to win its fourth section title in the last five years, and third straight. They won they Class C title in 2008.
