By By BRIAN SANDLER

WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - Down 19-12 in the final minute on Friday, Whitesboro threw a 28-yard touchdown pass and made a two-point conversion for a season-opening 20-19 win over new Class A National rival Indian River.

Trailing late in the final quarter, Whitesboro got the ball on its own 20-yard line after holding the visiting Warriors to a missed field goal.  Facing 3rd and 1 at their own 29-yard line, Nick Mauro got the home Warriors going with a 43-yard run to the Indian River 28 with 1:11 remaining.

After two plays for no gain, quarterback Sean Jones hit Dave Fasolino in the end zone for the duo's second touchdown connection of the game, cutting it to 19-18 with :59 left. Jones then threw to Tyler Calhoun for the two-point conversion to put Whitesboro ahead, and Chris Gibbs effectively ended the game with 15 seconds left when he intercepted quarterback Zane Fish on the Indian River's final drive.

Gibbs also had an interception in the first quarter, picking off Fish in the end zone to start Whitesboro's first touchdown drive that tied the game 6-6.

Indian River, which played the past 11 seasons in Section X, went ahead midway through the fourth quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Fish.
