Mohawk Girls Knock Off West Canada

Sports WKTV

The basketball gods clearly do not want the West Canada Valley girls to win a sectional title three-peat. For the fourth time in school history, the Lady Indians were coming off back-to-back Section III titles, and for the fourth time, that streak failed to continue, as the Lady Indians were doomed by key injuries and lost to upset-ready Mohawk on the road 41-17 in the Class C-2 quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Leading scorer Desiree Fauvelle and floor general Chloe Mankouski, both seniors, missed significant time toward the end of the regular season with a right ankle injury and a left knee injury, respectfully. The team had hoped the time off would allow the injuries to heal for the playoffs, but Fauvelle was forced to leave the game in the 3rd quarter and Mankouski was ineffective, as well.

Mohawk, the No. 4 seed, didn't waste any time taking advantage of its opponent, opening a 13-4 lead after the 1st quarter and shutting out No. 5 West Canada in the 2nd for a 23-4 halftime edge.

Brittany Harvey led the Lady Mohicans with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Karlee Platts added seven points and 10 boards. No Lady Indian reached double figures in scoring.

Mohawk, now 14-7, advances to face the winner of No. 1 Beaver River vs. No. 9 Sandy Creek in the semifinals. West Canada Valley ends the season 12-9.
