Richfield Girls Knock Off Mills In Thriller

Sports WKTV

Free throw shooting is never more imporant than in the playoffs, and the Richfield Springs girls proved it on Saturday, as Jessica Hext made two free throws with seven seconds left to send the Lady Indians into the Section III Class D championship game with a 41-39 win over New York Mills.

Richfield, the No. 3 seed, led by five points at halftime and stretched it to 14 in the 3rd quarter. But the Lady Marauders, the No. 2 seed, fought all the way back, with Samantha Szkotak tying it at 39 on a three-point play with a minute and a half left in the 4th quarter.

Still tied at 39 with 15 seconds left, Hext drew a foul at mid-court, setting up her free throws. Mills then lost control of the ball on the ensuing possession, and when a jump ball was called and the possession arrow pointed at Richfield, the Indians raised their arms in celebration.

Katie Moshier was the star of the game for the victors, finishing with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

Richfield, now 17-5, advances to play the winner of No. 1 Sackets Harbor and No. 4 Hamilton in the championship next Saturday at Onondaga Community College at 2:00. New York Mills, ranked 8th in the state in Class D coming in, ends the season 18-4.
