HERSHEY, P.A. (WKTV) - Nathan Walker's goal just 3:51 into the game was all the Hershey Bears would end up needing to beat the Utica Comets in preseason action at the Giant Center on Friday night.
The Bears goaltender, David Leggio, cruised his way to a 6-0 shutout win, stopping all 25 shots he faced, with a large majority of the Comets shots coming from above the circles.
The Bears jumped out to an early lead on Nathan Walker's shot from the point that hit goaltender Cannata in the mask, landed behind the goaltender and dribbled into the net. The Bears would finish the first period strong by scoring two goals just 1:34 apart, with goals from Josh Brittain and Peter LeBlanc respectively, to take a 3-0 lead, and 16-9 shots advantage, into the second period.
The second period saw a bit more of intensity out of the Comets, as the teams squared off for 3 fights.
The Bears picked their game back up in the third period, burying two more powerplay goals just :35 apart. Derek Whitmore got things started with 14:52 left in the third, followed up quickly thereafter by a Ruegsegger goal. The Bears weren't done yet. With 2:37 left to play, Johnson dumped the puck into the Comets zone, Cannata went behind the net to play the puck, and the puck took a weird bounce off of a stanchion and into the slot right on to Garrett Mitchell's stick. Cannata made a diving, sprawling save on the initial shot, but Mitchell followed his own rebound, and tallied the final goal of the night.
Patrick Wey (0-2-2) and Chay Genoway (1-1-2) both finished with 2 points a piece to lead the Bears.
The Utica Comets will host the Adirondack Phantoms 4 p.m. Sunday in sold-out preseason action, at John F. Kennedy Arena.
