New Hartford, Proctor Cheerleading Squads Win State Titles

Andrew Donovan

The Utica Aud was filled with some major team spirit and pep Saturday. Over 700 cheerleaders from around the state turned out to perform at the New York State Cheering competition.

From jumps to twirls these high school and college teams really pumped it up. The organizer says it is a chance for these side line supporters to be on the front lines for a change.

It was a great day for the only local squads competing. The New Hartford Spartans Varsity Team and the Proctor Raiders Varsity Team took home first prizes in their divisions, making them both state champions.

SportLover, you need to relax. Obviously you have something against cheerleading. As for a distraction, do you also feel that the sports fans who are watching and cheering in the stands are distracting? They're cheering right along with the cheerleaders, doing the same thing. Do you think that sports teams want to play a game in silence? As for competitions, there are plenty of them that require these cheerleaders to qualify. Do you even watch ESPN? These teams work extremely hard year-round!

we might pay a fee to attend but you are the one paying a fee to get into basketball games. High school cheering you cheer for both girls and guys bball. The money schools spend to send the players to other school is basically them paying to get into the game. The school pays for the cheerleaders for most likely 1 time a season to go to a competition. It's the same thing. I dont know why you are being so rude about this and had to comment about cheerleaders. Especially that you dont care.

we do go through qualifications. i think you are the one being rude. Half the time the crowd doesn't even cheer for the teams playing at all! It doesn't distract the players it helps them want to do better. Cheerleading isn't what you think it is. We do hard work like every team does! You try running, crunches, sit ups, push ups, splits, putting people up in the air. This isn't just hey im pretty look at me or anything. It was a state sanctioned event.

I will agree to disagree, and really how can you tell me that you honestly think they are the reason teams win? Are you serious!!!! That comment started my day off with some great humor!!!Regardless, my point was that it was not a state sanctioned evernt. IN all SPORTS you actually have to go through vigorous qualification to participate in states. Not pay a fee to attend.

Actually cheerleaders are not distraction at sporting events. Half the time cheerleaders are the reason why the team wins when there is a close tie between the teams. Even though you may not think it is a sport, competitive cheerleading should be a sport! Also, in cheerleading no one is benched or replaced, u find confidence in urself and you trust more people.

maybe you should go to a REAL cheerleading practice and try to do HALF the stuff those squads do, you would be AMAZED and i GAURANTEE you wouldnt be able to keep up... cheerleading is more than just jumping up and down.. its dancing, gymnastics, stunting, pyramids, jumping, and yelling all at the same time. believe me, in high school i was DIE HARD SOCCER BBALL and SOFTBALL then one year i decided to try out for cheerleading cuz i felt the same way you did, and it was HONESTLY the most difficult

1. Congrats but relax 2. This was not a sanctioned state event where teams had to qualify, anyone with the money could enter the tournament. Cheerleading is not recognized as a sport by anyone but the parents of these kids. Sorry to say but they are a distraction at sport events who do nothing but offer comic relief. How many teams were in each division 3, 4?
