Matt “The Hammer” Hamill, the Mixed Martial Arts fighter from Utica, registered a second round technical knockout over Tim Boetsch in the nationally televised UFC event Wednesday night. A Light Heavyweight contender in the UFC, Hamill ran his MMA record to 6-1.

Hamill returned to the octagon for the first time since knee surgery this past fall. “The Hammer” had injured his knee before his September 2007 fight in London, where he suffered a highly controversial split decision loss.

The first five minute round was fairly even. Hamill scored an early take down of Boetsch, but the referee forced both fighters top their feet when Hamill couldn’t capitalize on his advantage. Boetsch rocked Matt with several hard knees to the head, one of which caused a nasty split of Hamill’s lower lip.

In the second round, Hamill slipped and fell when attempting a kick to Boetsch’s head, but avoided any trouble by working his way away from his opponent. Both fighters were accomplished college wrestlers. When Boetsch attempted a take down, Hamill fought him off, gained the advantage and pummeled Boetsch. From a dominate position on the chest of his opponent, Hamill rained left handed punches to Boetsch’s head until the referee stopped the fight.

Matt Hamill trains in the Utica area at Executive Fitness in New Hartford, the Utica Boxing Club and Master Seng’s Martial Arts Academy in New Hartford.
