Little Falls Out-Slugs Herkimer

HERKIMER, N.Y. -- It certainly wasn't pretty, but for a team in need of a win, it was plenty beautiful. Little Falls jumped out to a 6-0 lead, let it slip away, then beat Herkimer in its final at-bat Friday night at Harmon Field 11-9.

Tied 9-9 going into the seventh inning, Little Falls pulled ahead on an RBI triple by Paul Barnes, who then scored on a sacrifice fly for a two-run lead. Herkimer, which had scratched and clawed its way back throughout the game, could not come up with an answer, giving the visitors the victory.

In the top of the first inning, Little Falls looked to be on its way to a blowout with a six-run outburst, but the bottom of the inning showed there was a long way to go. Little Falls made four errors in the frame, but Herkimer only got one run thanks to two pickoffs at second (replays showed one was a bad call).

From there, it was back-and-forth. Herkimer cut it to 6-3 in the second, Little Falls made it 8-3 in the third, then Herkimer answered right back, cutting it to 8-5, and finally tied the game at 9-9 in the fourth on a two-run triple by Mike Fahey. But Little Falls held Herkimer down from there to set up its last-inning heroics.

Little Falls improves to 2-3 in league play and 3-10 overall; Herkimer drops to 1-3 (4-9).
