Smith Stays Perfect In League Play Against Adrean

Sports WKTV

ROME, N.Y. -- While nothing is ever guaranteed in sports, at this point, it's hard to believe Smith will not win the Oneida County Legion baseball title. While every other squad in the 13-team league has at least four losses, Smith stayed perfect in league play Saturday at old RFA High School, holding off visiting Adrean 7-4.

Adrean, which lost its first meeting with Smith 11-8 in the second game of the season, had a chance to jump in front in the first inning with runners on first and second with no outs and runners on second and third and one out. But ace lefty Garrett Baker struck out the next two batters to escape the threat, and the offense built a 5-0 lead over the next five innings to give him all the support he'd need.

Baker battled through six innings, allowing nine hits but just two runs in his final frame. He struck out three and walked two. On the other side, Steve Campbell threw a six-inning complete game for Adrean, but was tagged for seven earned runs on 10 hits. He also struck out three and walked two. Kyle Richardson led Smith's offense with three hits and two RBI.

Smith is now 14-0 in league play (15-2-1 overall); Adrean drops to 9-6.

That runner would have scored from 3rd if the baserunner had only slid into 3rd. Why would you go running into home plate without sliding. That was a big out. Too bad because adrean post is probably the only team that can beat smith.
