Yard Dogs Win Season Opener

JOHNSTOWN, N.Y. -- The Utica Yard Dogs amateur football team opened its inaugural season in winning fashion on Saturday, edging Glove Cities on the road 26-20.

The Yard Dogs, formerly the Mohawk Valley Vikings based in Rome, once again relied on running back Romell Ponder. The Utican carried the ball 12 times for 64 yards and three touchdowns. Alex Heath of Utica added 76 yards on six carries, and quarterback Bill Peterson from Ilion went 4-13 for 56 yards.

Utica's next game is also on the road, at Albany on July 19th. The Yard Dogs' home opener is July 26th against St. Lawrence.
