MMA: Hamill – Franklin now official

Sports WKTV

As NewsChannel 2 Sports told you last week, Utica’s Matt “The Hammer” Hamill will take on former UFC Middleweight champion Rich Franklin in the top fight on the undercard of UFC 88 in Atlanta on September 6th. The UFC made the official announcement yesterday.

Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell headlines event against Rashad Evans.

Franklin will be stepping up in weight to fight as a Light Heavyweight. Hamill will be stepping up in class to fight a former UFC champion. Hamill is 5-1 in the UFC. The only blemish on his record is a highly controversial split decision loss, in London, to Michael Bisping, last year.

UFC 88 will mark the third time in his brief career that Hamill has fought in the co-main event at a UFC event. Hamill, who is well known as a deaf athlete, was a three time NCAA Div. III National Wrestling Champion at RIT.

Born in Ohio, “The Hammer” now trains in and fights out of Utica.

UFC 88 is a pay-per-view event.
