Weather Forces False Start In Yard Dogs' Home Opener

Brian Sandler

UTICA, N.Y. -- In this case, it did rain on the Utica Yard Dogs' parade. Playing their inaugural home opener against St. Lawrence at D'Alessandro Stadium, Utica took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, then had the game suspended with 4:56 remaining in the second due to lightning. When severe storms entered the area, the game was suspended until a later date, at which point it will pick up where it left off.

Despite the threat of bad weather before the game, about 275 people showed up to watch the revamped amateur football franchise that was formerly the Mohawk Valley Vikings based in Rome. Running back Alex Heath scored the touchdown on a two-yard run, set up by a 30-yard completion from Bill Peterson to Andre Bowes that put the Yard Dogs on the Trailblazers' 4-yard line.

Utica, still 1-1 on the season, hits the road again for its next two games against Southern Tier and Troy. Its next home game is August 16th against Buffalo.
