Copper City Chiefs Hire Head Coach

Sports WKTV

ROME, N.Y. --  The Copper City Chiefs have hired their first head coach, signing Michael Beavis of Mexico, N.Y to a two-year contract with a third-year option.  Chiefs owner Wayne Premo says Beavis' big-name connections should help in recruiting and coaching players for the new team in the new Eastern Professional Hockey League.
Beavis' hockey career started as a nine-year-old in 1966 when he played in the Westfield Youth Hockey Association in Westfield, Massachusetts.  Beavis continued to play in Western Massachusetts from 1976-1979 for the JR B league hockey under Eddie Shore and James Anderson.  Beavis played one season of JR B in Ottawa before a serious off-ice leg injury ended his playing career.
In 1977, Beavis became a staff member of the Anderson Hockey School and held many coaching positions there over the next 30 years. In 2005, Beavis was the assistant coach of the Syracuse Stars EJHL and moved to assistant coach of the Oswego Admirals of the OPJHL for the 2006-2007 season.  Beavis has also spent many years as a director and an instructor of many hockey schools, including Howe hockey.  In 1996, he was given the athletes choice award by Gordie Howe for community work done for youth hockey programs.
Copper City will announce next week the dates and location of its open training camp, which will take place in September.  The Chiefs' season will start Saturday, November 1st at the Danbury MadHatters, and their home opener will be Friday, November 7th against the Jersey RockHoppers at the Kennedy Arena.

On the front this looks like a semi-high caliber beer league w/ allot of fists to keep a crowd. Why not play in the Aud? Utica would be better served be hosting a few 'A' Division Labatt Blue Tournaments. A few locals I play pick-up with were trying to recruit at pick-up hockey, that doesn't sound like "big-name connections" to me. They also noted US or dual citizenship was required, if that is true talent pool is already diluted. I wish Copper City the best, ECHL had a lot of growing pains.

This is a new first year league with no Jim Cashman or Andrew Haines. This league will work and grow. Very dedicated owners.Stay tune for some great hockey.

This is not the same league that competed over the past few seasons. This is a league that will compete with the SPHL and will have connections to higher level leagues. I feel that the city of Rome will benifit from the team and what it will contribute to the community. Go Chiefs!!!

This is a beer league level of hockey. This team just rents the arena by the hour like anyone else. This league has failed 3 different times.
