Smith survives, Utica eliminated in state American Legion tournament

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - In a nightcap that went past midnight because of an earlier rain delay, Smith made it worth the wait as it came back to beat Saratoga 9-6 in an elimination game on Friday/Saturday in the New York State American Legion Tournament at Murnane Field.

Smith trailed 6-3 going to the bottom of the sixth but scored five runs in its at-bat to take the lead for good.  For more on the game, click here.

In the first game Friday, Rockland OTB scored eight straight runs and shut out Utica until the ninth inning Friday as it stayed alive in the New York State American Legion Tournament with an 8-4 elimination win at Murnane Field.

Six different players drove in a run and six different players scored a run for Rockland OTB, which is from north of New York City.  Chris Konkowski threw 8 shutout innings before Utica finally got to him, finishing with four runs allowed (three earned) on seven hits and three walks in 8.1 innings.  He struck out only two, relying mostly on groundouts to get the job done.

Ryan Donovan threw a complete game on the losing end, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits and three walks and striking out 10.
