CLINTON, N.Y. (WKTV) - Anthony Scarpino scored three goals and added an assist to lead Hamilton College to a 7-3 win against visiting Tufts University in a New England Small College Athletic Conference men's ice hockey game at Russell Sage Rink on Friday.
Scarpino recorded his second hat trick in the last six games. He also had three goals and an assist in a 7-3 upset win against then-No. 13 Wentworth Institute of Technology on Jan. 2. Joe Buicko and Chris Lorenc chipped in one goal and three assists apiece against Tufts. Calvin Bartel made 30 saves and improved his record to 4-3-0 in goal. The Continentals snapped a three-game losing skid.
Zach Diaco, Dylan Plimmer and Trevor John scored the goals for the Jumbos. Scott Barchard made 17 saves before he was replaced by Jay McNamara '10 midway through the second period. McNamara stopped 16 shots as Barchard, who allowed five goals, was lifted for the first time all season. He entered the night ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III with a .954 save percentage.
Hamilton (6-6-1 overall, 3-5-0) set the tone early as Scarpino scored his first goal just 1 minute, 21 seconds into the first period. Sam Choate '12 made the score 2-0 with his first goal this season at 11:02, and Scarpino made it a three-goal cushion 15 seconds later.
The Continentals continued to pour it on in the second period. Buicko notched a short-handed goal 1:45 into the period for a 4-0 lead. Bryan Kelly followed with his third goal as Hamilton was on the power play at 7:15. Scarpino's third goal of the night -- and ninth this season -- was another short-handed tally that made the score 6-0 at 9:32. Lorenc's ninth goal gave the Continentals a comfortable 7-0 lead with 4:03 left in the period.
Hamilton was 1-for-3 on the power play and held a 40-33 advantage in shots. Tufts (7-4-1, 4-3-1) was just 1-for-9 with the extra skater. The Continentals have won the last three meetings with the Jumbos and now lead the all-time series, 8-3.
Hamilton hosts Connecticut College for another NESCAC game on Saturday, Jan. 16. Tufts travels to Amherst College for another conference contest on Saturday as well.
