HERKIMER, N.Y. - The three time defending NJCAA Division III champion Herkimer College men's soccer team welcomed Utica for a scrimmage at Wehrum Stadium Monday night. Both teams will be opening their seasons this weekend, with two home games.
Jermaine Windster scored goals in the first and second of three 30 minute periods for the Generals, who are hoping to win their fourth straight title in memory of their late captain and leader, Pete McAvoy.
Herkimer once again has a host of new players this year, so head coach Pepe Aragon's team has a lot of work ahead of them. "The biggest thing here is really trying to get the guys on the same page," says Aragon. "It's early. The system we play, most the guys have never played it, so it's getting them to learn it. To be honest, we really don't learn as a team until halfway through the season, so we go through our bumps and bruises. But as soon as we're on the same page, it's a fun style and this is going to be a fun team to watch."
Utica has a new coach this season, former player and assistant coach, Brian Marcantonio, who is also a graduate of Frankfort-Schuyler high school.
