UC's Davis earns 200th coaching win

UTICA, N.Y. - 14th year Head Coach Michele Davis recorded her program-best 200th career victory and junior forward Samantha Stayer (Allegany, NY/Allegany-Limestone) netted a career-high 28 points as the Utica College women's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent SUNY Cobleskill, 79-60, Monday evening at the Clark Athletic Center.

Junior shooting guard Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) chipped in with a season-high 15 point effort, while freshman Kelsey Cowell (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) added 13 points and six rebounds as the Pioneers snapped a five game slide and improved to 5-8 overall.

Cobleskill has now lost four of its last five outings and the Fighting Tigers are now 2-9 overall on the year. Cobleskill was led by double-digit scoring efforts from Samantha Davis (15), Shelby Preston (15), Kady Porterfield (12) and Tracee Schiebel.

Utica jumped out a 17-6 lead in the first 8:51 of the contest behind a combined 15 points from Stayer and Cowell. UC was 7-for-12 from the floor in the opening stretch. Stayer also finished the evening with 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

UC was able to extend its lead to 14 points, 41-27, as the halftime horn sounded. Utica shot 56% from the floor in the first half and converted on 4-of-6 3-pointers, three of which were made by Kahane.

Cobleskill would not go down without a fight as it opened the second half on a 19-11 run the first 11:18 of the half to cut UC's lead to just six points, 52-46, with 10:12 left in regulation.

The Pioneers answered with a 27-10 run in a span of 8:11 in the second half to take its largest lead of the game, 79-56, with 2:01 remaining. Stayer led the charge with 12 points in the stretch. The Pioneer defense also caused seven turnovers in the late push.

Cobleskill managed the only four points of the final 1:43, but it was too late, as the Pioneers earned the 19 point victory.

Utica never surrendered the lead in the game and finished the night shooting 50% (30-for-60) from the floor. The Pioneers also caused 28 turnovers on the evening which led to 25 points on the other end.

Junior guard Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) posted eight points and grabbed five rebounds, while freshman Monica Makuch (Brownville, NY/General Brown) (4) and junior Adriana Surprenant (Utica, NY/New York Mills) (5) combined for nine points for the Pioneers. Four points is a career-high for Makuch. Freshman Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) added five assists, two points, two rebounds and two steals for UC. Cowell and Kahane both the led way in the steals category for Utica with three apiece. Kahane finished the night going 4-for-8 from behind the 3-point arc.

Schiebel added five steals, seven rebounds and three assists to her 11 point evening for the Fighting Tigers. Shelby Preston also recorded a team-best nine rebounds for the visitors.

UC returns to the hardwood Friday as it opens up a stretch of seven-straight Empire 8 Conference games starting in Rochester, NY against Nazareth College. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. On Saturday, Utica journeys across town to face E8 foe St. John Fisher for a 4 p.m. start.
