Vernon based Royalty For Life favorite for Hambletonian

By MIKE LEVIN

VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV) - This Saturday at the Hambletonian Stakes, Harness Racing's version of the Kentucky Derby, the favorite to win is Royalty For Life, a three year old trotting horse who's based out of Vernon Downs this summer.

Royalty won a race this week at Vernon, one of nine in his career.  His career win totals are just about half a million dollars.

At the Hambletonian, Roaylaty will have to first qualify for the finals in one of three heats.  His trainer, George Ducharme, is confident is his horse.

"You can tell some horses like to win all the time and they have that desire all the time like a great athlete," says Ducharme.  "He has that, he wants to always feel good and when he wins, he lets you know about it, he's feeling great the next day.  He's cocky about it.  That's just one of his things, good horses show it to you."

Royalty For Life's jockey is Brian Sears, a V-V-S grad who's one of the very best in Harness Racing.

You can watch the Hambletonian final Saturday at 4:45 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
